Sofi Żezmer "Unmarked Space"

Sofi Żezmer examines how language and visible signs create meaning and shape our orientation in the world. The act of marking or naming defines what something is, how it is read and valued, and by whom. At the same time, it establishes belonging while also excluding. Unmarked Space refers to zones that resist fixed definitions and open up a field of possibilities where meaning has not yet been determined.

Żezmer’s work moves between abstraction and possible narrative interpretations. Through sculptures, installations, photographs and collage works on paper, she explores how shifting attention transforms information into new forms, often revealing the absurd and the surreal within everyday structures.

Sofi Żezmer (b. 1959, Łódź, Poland) studied in New York and has been based in Wiesbaden, Germany, since 1995. Her work has been presented internationally, including in Poznań, Warsaw, Malmö, Frankfurt am Main, Venice, Amsterdam, New York, San Francisco and Kanazawa.Candyland is a non-profit exhibition space run by nine people who take turns in inviting artists to exhibit. Candyland is located in south east Södermalm, a part of Stockholm where most of the artists’ initiatives in the city are located. Candyland was founded in February 2004.
