Mark Dion in his studio in the US

Welcome to visit the latest Art Classroom at Stockholm School of Economics (Handelshögskolan i Stockholm). The classroom is created by the American artist Mark Dion, b. 1961 — based in Copake, NY, USA. [Inauguration on the 17th of April]

For expression of interest to attend, please contact info@stockholmartweek.com with the headline 'SSE Mark Dion’.

Throughout his artistic practice Mark Dion examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world. His work consistently interrogates how institutions — whether natural history museums, universities, or economic bodies — construct and legitimise knowledge. A classroom at an academic institution such as the SSE is precisely the kind of dominant institution Mark Dion's work tends to put under the microscope. By appropriating archaeological, field ecology and other scientific methods of collecting, ordering, and exhibiting objects, the artist questions the objectivity and authoritative role of the scientific voice in contemporary society, tracking how pseudo-science, social agendas and ideology creep into public discourse and knowledge production.

All of the Art Classrooms at the Stockholm School of Economics are permanent, and function both as art installations as well as working, engaging learning environments. Other classrooms have been created by artists including; Yinka Shonibare, Carl Hammoud and Thomas Broomé.

Welcome to experience this new room together with Mark Dion's gallerist in Stockholm, Saskia Neuman and Tinni Ernsjöö Rappe from SSE Art Initiative.
